Welcome!

My goal in middle school English-language arts is to provide academic rigor with support so that all students enter high school confident readers and writers.

Together we read novels, short stories, essays, and poems with an emphasis on Common Core ELA standards. Additionally, the Reading Apprentice model guides student reading- students are expected to read, annotate, and practice metacognition strategies to better analyze and interpret readings across all genres.  These skills are explicitly taught within the ELA class as part of the reading curriculum to help all students construct meaning as well as think critically about language and literature.

Additionally, in ELA we will focus specifically on each part of the writing process from prewriting to  publishing to construct essays, short stories and poems.

About me-

I attended Saint Peter Martyr school in Pittsburg, Carondelet, and Saint Mary’s College, Moraga.   My own two children, now 31 and 28 years-old, attended Saint Agnes. I have taught adult English learners, high school, and junior high in Pittsburg.  I previously taught ELA at Saint Agnes from 2002 to 2012. This academic school year starts my 38th year in a class room.

When I am not sharing my love of reading and writing with my students, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, hiking, traveling, practicing yoga, cycling, and cooking.

Ms. Rivera is our 7th grade homeroom assistant and teaches math for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. She is passionate about helping students build confidence in math through problem-solving, collaboration, and real-world connections. Outside of school, she enjoys experiencing the joys of motherhood with her 1-year-old daughter and making trips back to San Diego to visit family and friends.
