A Fun, Interactive, and Engaging Spanish Curriculum

I have personally designed a Spanish curriculum that is fun, interactive, engaging, and thoughtfully structured to meet students at their individual level while helping them build confidence and excitement about learning Spanish.

My teaching philosophy is simple: when children are having fun, actively participating, and making meaningful connections, they are more likely to remember what they learn. For this reason, I incorporate a variety of hands-on activities throughout the curriculum, including games, songs, crafts, movement, conversations, cultural activities, and creative projects. These experiences allow students to practice Spanish naturally while developing their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

 Early Grades: Building a Strong Foundation

For our early elementary students, we begin with the building blocks of Spanish. Students are introduced to foundational vocabulary and language concepts such as:

• Spanish vowels and their sounds
• The Spanish alphabet
• Numbers
• Colors
• Shapes
• Body parts
• Greetings and introductions
• Classroom vocabulary
• Family and personal information
• Basic expressions and everyday Spanish

We work to build these essential skills quickly, thoroughly, and in a way that is developmentally appropriate and enjoyable for young learners.

One of my biggest teaching tools is PLAY! Students learn through many different games, songs, crafts, movement activities, repetition, and interactive experiences. Rather than simply sitting and memorizing vocabulary, students have opportunities to hear it, say it, move with it, create with it, and use it.

I have seen tremendous success with this approach because students become active participants in their learning. When they are laughing, singing, playing, creating, and communicating in Spanish, the language becomes something they experience, rather than something they simply study.

Our younger students will also have opportunities to connect language learning with culture through special projects and celebrations. For example, our Kindergarten students will create their own piñatas, giving them a hands-on way to explore Spanish vocabulary, creativity, and an important cultural tradition.

 Older Grades: Expanding Language Skills

For our older students, we begin the year by administering a Spanish placement/level assessment. This allows me to better understand each student’s current abilities and identify the skills they have already developed.

From there, instruction can be adjusted to meet students where they are and provide the appropriate level of challenge.

As students progress, we begin exploring the exciting and sometimes challenging world of Spanish verbs, conjugations, sentence structure and vocabulary.

Students will practice skills such as:

• Verb conjugation and usage
• Present-tense verbs
• Vocabulary expansion
• Sentence formation
• Questions and answers
• Reading comprehension
• Writing in Spanish
• Listening comprehension

Even with our older students, I continue to incorporate games, partner work, group challenges, competitions, collaborative activities, and interactive conversations to keep students motivated and involved.

 Spanish Language + Culture

An important part of our curriculum is connecting the Spanish language to the people, traditions, celebrations, and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world.

Students will have opportunities throughout the year to explore cultural traditions through stories, music, crafts, celebrations, and special school-wide activities.

One of our most meaningful traditions is our annual Día de los Muertos altar. This is a special tradition that brings our entire school community together. Students and families participate by bringing photographs of loved ones who have passed away. Together, we create a beautiful altar that honors their lives and keeps their memories alive.

This yearly tradition gives students an opportunity to experience culture in a meaningful and personal way while learning about the importance of family, remembrance, love, and honoring those who came before us.
